DON'T WE ALL

DON'T WE ALL

I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car.
I had just come from the car wash and was waiting
for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from
across the parking lot was what society would
consider a bum.

From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no
clean clothes, and no money. There are times when
you feel generous but there are other times that you
just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those
"don't want to be bothered times."
"I hope he doesn't ask me for any money," I thought.
He didn't.

He came and sat on the curb in front of the bus
stop but he didn't look like he could have enough
money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke.
"That's a very pretty car," he said.

He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him.
His scraggly blond beard keep more than his face warm.
I said, "thanks," and continued wiping off my car.

He sat there quietly as I worked. The expected plea
for money never came. As the silence between us widened
something inside said, "ask him if he needs any help."
I was sure that he would say "yes"
but I held true to the inner voice.

"Do you need any help?" I asked.

He answered in three simple but profound words that
I shall never forget. We often look for wisdom in great
men and women. We expect it from those of higher
learning and accomplishments.

I expected nothing but an outstretched grimy hand.
He spoke the three words that shook me.
"Don't we all?" he said. I was feeling high and mighty,
successful and important, above a bum
in the street, until those three words hit me like a
twelve gauge shotgun.

Don't we all?

I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to
sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and
gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to
get a warm meal and shelter for the day.
Those three little words still ring true.
No matter how much you have, no matter
how much you have accomplished, you need help too.
No matter how little you have, no matter how
loaded you are with problems, even without money
or a place to sleep, you can give help.

Even if it's just a compliment, you can give that.
You never know when you may see someone that
appears to have it all. They are waiting on you to give
them what they don't have. A different perspective on life,
a glimpse at something beautiful, a respite from daily chaos,
that only you through a torn world can see.
Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger
wandering the streets. Maybe he was more than that.

Maybe he was sent by a power that is great and
wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in themselves.

Maybe God looked down, called an Angel,
dressed him like a bum, then said,
"go minister to that man cleaning the car,
that man needs help."

Don't we all?

Finally deciding to share the burden
brought huge relief for one man

He hadn't had a decent night's sleep for months but for those nights when he drank
too much wine and he lapsed into that fitful drunken stupor that does not bring rest.

He awoke each morning still exhausted and with an avalanche of worries.
His business was going down the tubes.

It was a burden he carried on his own shoulders. His wife lying beside him was
blissfully unaware that he was struggling to meet the mortgage payments on their
detached home.

While she got the youngsters off to school and packed her gym bag into the 4x4,
he headed into town to meet his bank manager yet again to plead for another
extension on his overdraft facilities.

In truth, it wasn't the economic downturn that sounded the death knell for his
business but the economic boom.

His flagship retail unit in the centre of a town in the midwest was the cashflow
powerhouse of his fast-growing business interests. But when a brand new
shopping centre opened up on the outskirts of town, a UK multi-national
selling the same products took one of the units.

It was a double whammy. Not only was the town centre dead as locals
flocked to the new mall but the big UK competitor offered more choice
in new surroundings for the teenagers who were the lifeblood of his business.

He could compete on price, just about, but the lure of the new mall proved
irresistible. Turnover declined sharply.

In good times, he had paid over the odds for long-term leases on two other
retail outlets. It was risky but for a while it looked as though it was going to work.

Profits from the two additional stores were low, given the big rents he was
paying, and overheads were getting higher and higher. He couldn't run all
three shops himself but was happy enough with the two managers he had
employed to keep an eye on the counter staff. In all, he had to find wages
for eight people as well as himself.

He was, of course, working hard and playing hard. He invested in a piece
of development property and had the trappings of success. His circle of
friends changed. Now when he drank he was with other businessmen
who shared the same interests. All were hitched to the back of the
Celtic Tiger. If you weren't doing well you kept it to yourself.

Two expensive cars in the driveway, a new house, three young children
and a wife who liked to spend meant that his personal outgoings were
considerable. Then the downturn hit and in a matter of weeks he was
in serious trouble. Only three people knew the full extent of his worries:
himself, his accountant and his bank manager. His flagship store was still
just about profitable but his new shops were dying a death.

Family outgoings were being paid for out of personal savings.
What were once monthly meetings with an assistant bank manager
became near daily contacts by phone with the manager and weekly
face-to-face meetings to discuss his overdraft.

That's when the pressure started to get to him. He used to drink to unwind.
Now he drank to forget. He would never admit he was suicidal but will say
that "perhaps" he was depressed. He could share his worries with no one.
The stress was immense.

His resurrection began one evening as he and his wife had a glass of wine
after a late Sunday lunch and the evening news came on.
The news was all about the economy and the news was all bad.

His wife asked him casually how things were going in the business
and either because he had too much wine on board or he was
simply no longer able to keep up the pretence, it all came out.

In a few short minutes, he told her the truth -- that they were broke
and, worse still, they owed a small fortune.
He cried and then she cried.

"I can't tell you the relief of it -- of sharing the load.
Once my wife knew, it made things easier.
She took it well, better than I had hoped.
I think all along she knew I was struggling but was waiting for me to talk.
She felt that she would just be adding to it by hassling me.

"Of course, women have to talk about problems and
she told her friends and it all came out and my friends learned from their
wives that I was in bother. I don't mind. I never knew so many of us
were in the same boat," he says.

There are no happy endings yet but he is sleeping well enough and
working hard to make the best of a very bad situation.
He thinks he can save one of his stores and his family home if he gets enough time.
